To win an adult rec league basketball championship, players need to play together as a unit. But you can’t do that just by practicing with each other. A bond off the court needs to be established to gain the chemistry necessary to win.

On Maui I played with a team named Makai. One of our greatest strengths was our bond off the court. We got to know each other and could be brutally honest about each other’s play.

I had to be told to stop being a ball hog. It was a tough pill to swallow but I needed to hear that. It made communicating on the court much easier. This lead to more wins, especially in the playoffs. We won over 20 rec league basketball titles.

All our egos were put to the side for the greater good of the team. An important trait for any championship basketball team to have.

If your team isn’t doing very good, have a sports drink party after a game. Talk about what can be done to play better as a team. But more importantly, get to know each other!
