Eventually you are going to play an opponent who works as hard as you. They will match you skill for skill. This is when you may need to think up some ways to throw your opponent off their game. Here are 5 tips that can help.
- Pick up your man at half court and deny them the basketball. Not to many players like being pressed. Most will get frustrated with you and start to press.
You may not keep them from the ball all the time but now they have to work harder in order to get a pass.
Post up aggressively. Not dirty! The goal is to get the defender behind you. Not too many players enjoy being posted up. The baseline drop step is a hard move to stop when done correctly. Great way to draw fouls.
Pull up for jump shots on fast breaks. Most defenders think you’re going for a layup, this can leave room for a simple jump shot from around the free throw line. This will frustrate the defense. I used to tell myself “pull ups gotta go!”
Run the floor constantly. Nobody likes to guard the guy who never stops running. When you run the floor frequently it can lead to easy baskets or rebounds.- Play great help defense. Dribblers love to showcase their skills. But it’s hard against a second pair of hands.

None of these can be done effectively without practice and confidence.
